ALBUM – Homework

ARTIST – Daft Punk

YEAR – 1997

M.  This one is dedicated to someone.  No particular reason, I just thought I should dedicate something to someone.

I was about to turn 20 when this little masterpiece came along.  Yes, I wrote it, MASTERPIECE.  Say what you will about the french duo, this album is revolutionary.  Beyond any expectations.

The electronic scene was booming and evergrowing back then and these guys came along to define it, stylise it and make it their own.  The album, much like my dedication, are an homage to good times, to revolution and to change.  It is positive, very positive.

Another thing about 1997/98 is that I disliked “techno” and anything electronic – I grew up listening to Zeppelin and Cream and Hendrix.  Regardless, this album was overwhelming, and it left a permanent mark.

Also, as I began listening to it I realised how well it was produced.  I remember thinking  – I actually still visualise this – that it seemed like they recorded every instrument or note on a single tape or cd or whatever the fuck you record stuff on.  What I mean is that each note, each thump of the bass or glitter of the keyboard or tweaked vocals seems to be coming from a an infinite number of channels – as if each were recorded individually and then put together to form a song, and not the other way around, where you record all the instruments together, on a single channel (everything mashed together).

The Daft Punk sound is unique, as is the duo´s aesthetics and performance.  I was lucky enough to seem them live in Rio a couple of years back.  It was an awesome performance.  So loud, so much thumping.  Just good, good music and vibe.

I cannot stop listening to this album, ever.  Every playlist I arrange on iTunes for my iPods has at least 3 songs from “Homework”.  It is just that good and clingy.

Which brings me to another point.  I do not know what point that would be, but whatever.  I just feel good today.

I have actually been feeling good ever since I got back from a trip.  Met someone special, had an unbelievable time – exceeded all expectations – and am just happy with the way things are turning out.

Work is always a pain, but it has actually become tolerable due to the recent changes.

Anyways, enough lingering.  Songs one to sixteen are all brilliant – ALL!  Of course, there are the powerhouses: “Around the World” and “Da Funk”.  Lest not we forget to mention my personal favourite “Phoenix” – the build up is wicked.

Cheers…
