Here we go.

To put things in perspective, firstly: I have all Daft Punk’s albums, all.  I have been a fan since “Homework”, which means I have been having an affair with the duo since 1997.  I has been, wait, let me do the math, 14 years.

I listen to Daft Punk aggressively.  Very loud (very fucking loud) and a lot.  Nearly once a day there has to be a Daft Punk moment, a daily homage.

Point I want to make: I read in the papers they were coming to Rio de Janeiro.  Went to get tickets, for me and my girlfriend at the time (who, unlike me, likes other kinds of music).   Now, anxiety.

The day had come.  My at-the-time companion and me arrive unapropriately early (anxiety).  The show comes on.  Can you imagine my excitement?!  Really?!  The sound was ENORMOUS!  Big, loud, distorting amplifiers and boom boxes.  The ground was shaking and vibrating.  Holy Shit!  Daft Fucking Punk!!!

45 minutes into it, I look to the side, nothing there.  So I look down.  There she is.

So, as you may have expected, given the title, the show, for me, was cut short.  “Somebody” wanted to end the night early, they were tired and made it very clear (frustration).  Now, I seek catharsis.

So, I will, any time soon, start up a sign-off on Facebook pledging support for Daft Punk to come back to Brazil.

Lesson learned: when they do come back, I will go alone!

ALBUM – Hôtel Costes, Vol. 2: La Suite

Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Data, Mouth, Sloth and the Fratelli Brothers

These albums are brilliant.  The track selection and quality of the sound is near perfect.  This particular volume feels a bit different to me, in a good way.  It was the first one I listened too and the one I keep coming back to.  It has also got one of my all time favourite tracks, Mo’ Horizons’s “Flhyin’ Away”.

I don’t know, but listening to this album just makes me feel good, as if I were at peace.  It has a clean and subtle vibe.  Another positive aspect is that it doesn’t get boring or too “mellow”, like Buddha Bar, for instance – cannot stand Buddha Bar, it is way too “chill”.  Makes me want to sleep.

This compilation seems to have found a balance.  It is, as always, hard to put into words.  It doesn’t become all annoying and elevator music sounding – long live Kenny G! – it feels just right, and probably the most important thing about this particular release is that it carries itself like no other.  I mean, the way Stéphane has not only selected and placed each track, but the way in which he seems to move the music along is just brilliant.  Very, very cool.  I mean, how often do you get to listen to Pink Martini’s “Sympatique” switch to Mo Horizon’s “Flyin’ Away”?  How often, really?

Mr Pompougnac is hands down one of the best House DJs/producers around.  His Hôtel Costes series has come to 12 volumes – it all began in 1999; his latest release, Hôtel Costes, Vol. 12, is from 2009.  A 10 year run, and I am pretty sure he is not done, far from it.  Hôtel Costes is also actually a real place.  I might have forgotten to mention that.

This Volume 2 sends me back to Rome.  College, not so may worries, good times.

Some music, then.  Ok, so tracks 2, 3 and 4 are killers.  It really does not get any better than this.  Three perfect tracks perfectly fitted and customised – this is what I meant when I mentioned Popmpougnac’s prowess in mixing.  You start off with De Phazz’s “Jazz Music”, move along to Pink Martini’s “Sympatique” and follow that with Mo’ Horizon’s “Flyin’ Away”.  Really, try and top that.  The album feels a bit dreamy right around track I Cube’s “Adore”, but never lets down, because following that is Cesaria Evora’s “Carnaval de São Vicente” – what a moving song.  One last reference I wish to make is to Mr Scruff’s “Get a Move On”, probably the album’s more dancier song.  Brilliant, nonetheless.  So, please, feel free to check this out.
